My brother Peter took this picture and I couldn't get it out of my head. What a privilege it is to grow old with the one you love. What a gift to have weathered so many seasons and still choose each other. Of course it's hard. Of course they've fought at times. Of course it doesn't always look like a vacation at the beach. But there's a strength in these seasoned couples that matches a strong, firm tree. They're not going to fall apart with every gust of wind. Deeply rooted love looks like forgiveness and service and selflessness and listening and changing your worst parts and seeing past the worst parts of them. It's choosing each other first before kids and friends and work and all the other things that try to distract us, making sure the marriage is nourished. I feel lucky when I catch glimpses of couples like this, they make me happy and hopeful.
