Step Three: Lights & Darks

image.jpg

Step Three is a simple one. I block in the darkest shadows and the lightest highlights. I actually don't buy or use any black (except when I gesso), I mix my own using Deep Green, Phthalo Blue Deep and Alizarin Crimson. I like how much richer and deeper of a dark that makes, and that it bounces around some other colors in it. In terms of planning value, I'll try to put my highest contrast where my focal point is, to help draw the eye there. I get my paints from novacolorpaints.com and my brushes from rosemaryandco.com. I've been so pleased with the quality of both companies, as well as their customer service. I highly recommend them!
