Sometimes when I start a painting I play a game where I try to use as few strokes as possible. I like asking the question, what’s the least amount of detail I need to still tell this story? The beginnings of paintings are so rough and loose and I’m often so tempted to just leave them like that. Of course I rarely ever do. But the most successful paintings are often where I’m able to hold on to those bold brush strokes and resist the urge to overpaint everything. Being a painter is really the funnest job in the world. I’m endlessly fascinated mixing colors and telling stories with a paintbrush.
