Last Light
We were trying to eat at a restaurant I heard great things about (that of course didn’t take reservations). But when we got there and learned the wait was three hours, we abandoned the plan and decided to walk a few blocks away and eat somewhere else instead. I was hungry and tired of walking. But the walk ended up being the best gift of all. The golden light painted the whole city in magic tones, reflecting off every surface in brilliant hues. The last light of day is usually the best of all and I wanted to soak up every last drop of it. I looked at my teenagers as we were walking, thinking of how fast the sun is setting on their childhoods and feeling that same ache—I want to soak up every last drop of this golden time while they live under my wings before they become adults. It’s been beautiful all along, but I’m finding that like the golden hour, this might be my favorite time of all.
