This is a commission I did for a wonderful collector as a surprise to his wife. He loves buying my shoes and asked if I would do a commission project so he could have a custom pair of shoes. We have to make the art first so there’s an image I can use for the merch products, so we talked about that and he decided to do a fun big painting for his wall and then once it was done, we used the image and made the shoe merch he wanted too. I love the endless opportunities commission projects make for us— each one is so fun and unique. And why not bring joy to every space we inhabit, right?
Here are some questions people have had about commissions so far:
Q: Can you combine several pics? Would like hubby’s plane flying over our favorite beach.
A: Absolutely! I do this all the time for paintings and commissions. It’s hard to get all the right sources in the same photo, but we’ll often take the sky from one picture and the specific house or boat or car or bike or whatever from another photo and then sometimes the people (or the colors of their clothing or height compared to each other or uniforms or things like that) from another photo and sometimes there’s a detail like a bird or flower or object someone cares about that also needs to be added and we can pull that in. This is the expertise of being the artist and being able to aesthetically match these elements, but still in a proportional way with an eye for design and composition (instead of a bad AI or photoshop job). At the end of it, our goal is still to create fine art that can hang beautifully on your wall for years to come, and the creativity of original art still holds so much magic for that.
Q: Can I buy multiple commissions?
A: Yes! You can either add different sizes to the cart and checkout all at once or add multiple quantities of the same size (like if you were buying paintings for/of each grandchild). We’ll work on them as we’re ready and it’s okay if it’s not all at once. I have one collector who took advantage of a commission sale I had in 2018 and bought 10 and we’re still working through her list. She loves to reach out when she needs one as a gift or thinks of something else she wants. Prices have gone up quite a bit since then, so it was such a smart investment and fun to connect with her every time we do another one!
Q: What if I don’t know what I want yet?
A: That’s totally fine. You only need to pick a starting size and pay a deposit to secure the price and get your name on the list. We can then either roll the price into something bigger if you change your mind later, or we can play with ideas until you’re ready. I can work with you and narrow down categories or look through my catalog and see which types of paintings appeal to you so we can figure out what might fit you best.
Q: How do I know which size to pick?
A: I often tell people to think about where they’re thinking of hanging the piece of art and then take blue painters tape and mark out the spot on the wall in that exact measurement. Collectors are often surprised to see that the painting is either too small on a wall or not the right fit for the space. It’s hard to picture how much space things take up without visuals. But once you measure and mark it on your wall, you’ll know better what size range to buy.
