Bending

I got to play a game with some other artists where we all created art based on the same photo by a local photographer (used with his permission). It was so fun to see everyone's unique take on the same thing but in their own unique voice/style/talent. I ended up painting mine on my lap at my son's baseball game, as one does. When the artists got together (those who could, I love that there were even more versions) to share the final products, we were talking about each of our processes and how we made our pieces. The photographer made a joke, "I painted mine with light..." but really, he said it all. The magic of art is often trying to do exactly that-- find the light, pull it out of the shadow, bend it around the objects you're painting the same way this beltway bends around the valley at this angle of Mt. Olympus. It's finding those slivers of light that make life interesting and capturing the beauty in them, finding the highlights of joy in life, the wonderful in all the rest and holding on to them the brightest.
